Welcome...and a couple of notes...

Welcome to the Powerplay hockey blog. I will be updating the latest and greatest happenings of the Tampa Bay Lightning as the rest of the summer goes on and into next season, as well as giving some commentary on the direction of the hockey team. I am also working on some exciting things for the upcoming year, that I will hopefully have some news on soon, so stay tuned.

Now, on to the more important things. The Lightning "Young Guns" took to the ice today and I was able to view the evening session. The one player that stood out to me would have to be Alex Hutchings. The 4th round selection from Barrie of Ontario Hockey League has a wicked wristshot, and at least has the potential to be considered a steal. Also, to see Victor Hedman in person, he is massive, and can skate. I look forward to seeing these two especially on Saturday for the Young Guns scrimmage game to see how they look in game situations.

As far as the big club is concerned, as has been widely reported, the team has agreed to terms with 2nd overall pick Victor Hedman on a standard 3 year entry level contract. From the press release: "We are thrilled to be able to take this next step with Victor today,” said Lawton upon making the announcement. "He has a bright future and we intend on him being a member of the Lightning for a long time. We are excited to get his signing behind us so he can solely focus on hockey and the continued development of his game.”

Also, with out giving too much away, expect the backup goaltender position to be addressed Friday. (And one division rival not being too pleased about it.)
